NEW - Black Dog Institute: Research study into Early warning signs of bipolar disorder in young people
This study aims to identify the early warning signs of mood disorders in young people. We'd like to interview people aged between 18 and 35 years, who have been diagnosed with either bipolar disorder or depression and whose first symptoms appeared prior to the age of 24 years.
Cognitive and Affective Symptoms of Schizophrenia Intervention (CASSI) Trial
The University of NSW and the Neuroscience Research Australia are recruiting people between 18-50 years old with schizophrenia to participate in a trial using a medication to activate hormone receptors in the brain and improve learning and memory (recruiting will finish in July 2011).
Research Study into Community Treatment Orders We would like to speak with you about your experiences, including your participation in decision-making and your reflections on the ideas of ‘risk' and ‘capacity'. This project provides a chance to increase our knowledge about the experiences and views of people who have had a mental illness and their carers. We will use the knowledge we gather to make the CTO decision-making processes better. The project is funded by NSW Health and approved by the University of Sydney Human Research Ethics Committee [reference number 12583]. Who is able to take part? What will it involve? If you'd like to participate, please contact us. For further information, please contact Edwina Light at 02 9036 3418 or edwina.light@sydney.edu.au
Community Treatment Orders (or CTOs) are legal orders that authorise involuntary mental health care - such as medication and therapy, counselling, management, rehabilitation and other services - for people living in the community. We are looking for people to tell us about their experiences of CTOs.
We want to find out what it's like to be under a CTO and we want to speak to the people caring for and supporting people under CTOs. That way we hope to improve the whole process.
To be able to take part in this study you must either:
* be currently on a CTO or have been on a CTO in the past 2 years in NSW, or
* be a primary carer to a person currently on a CTO or who was on a CTO in the past 2 years in NSW.
You must also:
* be 18 years of age or older.
* be able to speak and understand English.
* Coming to an interview with the researcher at the offices of Carers NSW, or the Mental Health Coordinating Council, or the New South Wales Consumer Advisory Group - Mental Health Inc. For details of office locations please contact us.
* $40 reimbursement for your time and travel expenses.

University of NSW and the Black Dog Institute: triggers of Highs and Lows in Young People with Bipolar Disorder
The University of NSW and the Black Dog Institute are investigating the types of behaviours and activities that trigger highs and lows in young people with bipolar disorder. They are recruiting participants who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, are between the ages of 18-30 years, and can speak and understand English to complete either an online survey or an interview.
University of NSW and the Black Dog Institute: Cognitive Styles in Mood Disorder
This study examines the role of cognitive style - the way we interpret events, our attitudes and beliefs, personality style, and self-esteem) - and coping behaviours in depression and bipolar disorder. The information from this study will inform research and treatment practices, and is likely to shed light on how psychological therapy may be more effective for those with different types of mood disorders. The study will primarily be online, where you will be asked to fill out questionnaires at different times over the internet. To be eligible to participate, you need to: i) be aged 18-65, ii) have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder or depression, iii) have an email address that you check regularly, and iv) have a good comprehension of English. We are also looking for ‘healthy' participants (i.e. those who have never experienced an episode of clinical depression over their lifetime) for this research. Participants will receive a Black Dog Institute book and go in the draw to receive one of two $150 Myer Shopping vouchers. To participate in this study or obtain more information, contact Kathryn (02 9382 9269, email coping@unsw.edu.au), or visit the study website: http://www.cognitive-styles.com.au/info
